Joshua Stega: 20+ years helping Australians invest
From the GFC to 500+ ETFs
I’m Joshua Stega, an Australian financial adviser based in Sydney. I started my career in 2005 as an Associate Adviser at Wilson HTM in Brisbane. In 2007 I moved to Sydney to join UBS Wealth Management as an Associate Director, advising high-net-worth clients, just as the Global Financial Crisis hit. Starting out in a crisis taught me early that protecting money matters as much as growing it.
In 2013 I founded my own advice firm, JAS Wealth, and in 2025 I founded ETF Adviser, where I’m Head of Research. Since then I’ve worked through the GFC recovery, COVID, rate shocks and the AI boom, and for the past several years I’ve focused entirely on ETFs: which ones deserve a place in a portfolio, when to buy and when to sell.
When I started there were only a handful of ETFs in Australia. Today there are more than 500. That’s a lot of choice, and a lot of noise. ETF Adviser turns my weekly research into clear, practical ideas so you don’t have to research them all yourself.
Career
Weekly ETF research, model portfolios and trade alerts for Australian investors, plus ReviewETF, a free tool to compare every Australian ETF.
Helping successful individuals manage their wealth with independent thinking and the best products, services and investments available.
Advice exclusively for high-net-worth individuals.
Advice for a broad range of clients, from executives to SMEs and high-net-worth investors.
A simple, repeatable process
Core and satellite. A low-cost diversified ETF as the core, held through the cycle, with a smaller satellite portion for themes, regions and commodities when they’re trending.
Follow the trend. Roughly three in four investments move with the broader market, so I track 17 markets in our Market Health-O-Meter and buy satellites only at clear buy points, using my base and trend method, always with a stop loss.
Protect capital. When conditions turn risk off, I move satellite positions to cash and wait. Small losses are fine; big ones are hard to recover from.
“As my dad always said: keep it simple, stupid.”
Research, tools and teaching
ETF Adviser publishes weekly ETF research for Australian investors: the Weekly ETF Intelligence Report, the Weekly Brief, model portfolios and trade alerts. See how it works.
ReviewETF is a free tool I built because I couldn’t find one place to compare every Australian ETF, from every issuer, on both exchanges. Try ReviewETF ↗
