Hedged or unhedged?
UnhedgedYou get the investmentβs return plus or minus the currency move. A falling Australian dollar boosts returns; a rising one hurts.
HedgedRemoves most of the currency effect, so you get the return in the local market. Often used when the Australian dollar is low and expected to rise.
How to use currency hedged ETFs
Many investors hold both: part of their international shares hedged and part unhedged, so they donβt need to predict the Australian dollar. Itβs a portfolio decision rather than a trade, which is a big part of how we build the core.
